Hello and welcome to the S.E.Wales Young Archaeologist’ Club website.
As the name suggests we are the South East Wales branch of the Young Archaeologist’ Club (known affectionately as YAC), which is a club aimed at children with an interest in all things archaeological and historical. So, here are some basic facts about who we are and what we do.
When does the club meet?
The clubs generally meets on the second Saturday of every month, between 10:00am and 12:00. However, occasionally this has to change in order for us to offer the best opportunities possible, for example if we are carrying out an excavation, if we have been invited to participate in an event with a different organisation etc. But we will let you know in the newsletter forthcoming meetings, and on the website.
Where does the club meet?
Although we say we are based at the Roman Legionary Museum, we also move around a lot, depending on the meeting’s agenda. Again, we will notify you of the location of the meeting through the newsletter forthcoming meetings and the website. We will also try to give you directions, map and postcode (for those with sat nav) so that you can find the place as easily as possible.
We do hope this answers your questions about the club. Take a look at some of the previous newsletters etc that are on the website, and please feel free to pop along to our next meeting, to see if you’d like to join. Any other questions you may have, please contact us.
Karl Lee makes the most beautiful replica hand axes, scrapers and jewellery from flint. This naturally occurring material was used from the Stone Age to make weapons and tools.
Interested? Then come and have a go at flint knapping for yourself at Caerleon Roman Legionary Museum.
By the way, what is OBSIDIAN? Answers on a piece of paper on the day. First correct answer pulled out, gets an amazing prize.

Cave art in the Garden at Caerleon Roman Legionary Museum
This year National Archaeology festival is from 16th-31st July, and so we are hosting a second meeting in July.
The museum has a theme of beliefs running throughout July to link to the festival. Our idea is to make a REALLY big wall of Cave art type paintings in the museum garden. These ancient works of art were so mysterious, no-one knows exactly what they are all about, but many interpretations suggest they are to do with the religion and beliefs of the people creating them. They are also on walls wherethere is no evidence to suggest they lived there, and are often very difficult to get to, suggesting the areas were chosen for another reason.
Come between 10-12:00 to get the wall underway, or come later to keep it going. Bring your friends and family too.
